Letter from the Executive Committee

Friends:

It is hard to believe that it has been a year since a few people met for lunch to discuss how to revive the Boston Chapter of SHPE. In this time, there have been many “wins” for our organization in terms of what we want to accomplish, as well as some challenges.

We are very proud of the work we have done providing professional development events for our members, supporting Massachusetts-based SHPE student chapters in building their own organizations, and developing programs that encourage pre-college students to pursue careers in engineering and science. In addition to these accomplishments, we are also in the process of building our corporate sponsorship roster, developing a new SHPE Boston website, and drafting new bylaws that will take this organization into the future.

While there have been many positive aspects to our first year, our Chapter also experienced some growing pains. This required us to reorganize our leadership, prioritize our goals for the organization, and focus our resources on the programs that will provide the most value to our constituents. Although these things may be considered challenges, they have only strengthened our resolve to do even better in our second year.

As we close out our FY 2010 (ending on June 30, 2010), we are encouraged by our prospects! Our primary goals for the remainder of this year and all of next year are (1) to actively engage our membership and partners on a regular basis, and (2) to build our IT capabilities to better serve our constituents. As we continue on this path, we are confident that SHPE Boston will realize its vision to cultivate and develop Latino talent in the area for successful careers in science and engineering.

Sincerely,

SHPE Boston, Executive Committee
